It's not about the event; it's about the event AFTER the event...

I love the idea of #FollowFriday on Twitter, so I want to dedicate occasional posts to people who have been (and still are) amazing parts of my life.  I will do this not only to honor them, but also to share examples of how building relationships can change the trajectory of your career and life is staggering.  It will take quite some time to honor those who have impacted me and do so in a way that you find value in the example, so I'll just start with one, and keep going from there.  My First Honoree...Nadia Bilchik. Nadia is a friend, business partner and someone I greatly look up to.  Just read her linkedin page, and you'll see that many others feel as I do, although I like to think I'm special. (But you know, my mom once said, "honey, you're special...just like everyone else")

Nadia  http://www.nadiaspeaks.com/  has also produced and anchored feature programs for CNN International, and is an expert in Networking - a term that can have a bad rap, but when exposed for what it is: building meaningful, strategic relationships, it is a cornerstone of success.  She wrote the Little Book of Big Networking Ideas and absolutely embodies every principle she preaches.  I am fortunate to have met her at a Coca-Cola Panel discussion; she was moderating, and I was on the panel. After the panel, she approached me and said, "you should be a speaker", and I replied to her, "so should you" (to my suprise, I was speaking to a world renowned speaker....who teaches, among other things, presentation skills and communication!!).  We set a date to have coffee, and unlike so many others, we actually did it.  The coffee meeting that day revealed many similarities and differences, but it also exposed a common love to influence others to become their very best.  We began working together, and Nadia welcomed me into her company, Greater Impact Communications, and her circle of trust.  We have become partners, friends, and co-authors (working on a book together!).  She is giving, loving, engaging, and simply brilliant.

I remember one particular lesson I learned from her, which she passed on from one of her mentors.  She said, in her fabulous South African accent, "it's not about the event...it's about the event after the event".  This saying refers to the priciple that what you are doing today...now...is not always just about now - what's also important is what happens as a result. This customer, today...yes, they are important, but what is equally, if not more, important, is who they tell about your business, whether or not they come back tomorrow, and if they recommend your product or service.  The person you meet on a plane, or at a company event - it's not good enough to have their card...what are you going to do with it?

I have applied that saying in SO many ways.  I use it in speeches, coaching and mentoring.  Consider this blog post.  It's not about this post -it's about what happens as a result: who reads it, passes it along, finds value in the story.  It's really about what happens as a result.  That is true for advertisements, promotions, training events, hiring, you name it.  Simply stated, it's thinking through to the desired reaction of today's action, and leveraging that vision to make today's actions as strategic and powerful as they can be.  Always think through to the next step; what do you want to ULTIMATELY achieve, and will your current action likely lead to that?

I met Nadia; she enhanced my life and career...but it's not about that meeting, it's about all the things I do as a result.  Nadia, if you read this...thank you.  For those who don't know her, if you are lucky enough to attend a seminar, or even better, meet her at one of her events....don't leave it there; create an event after the event...you'll be glad you did.  ...Follow up - have that cup of coffee...make that phone call, and always think about what more you can do...the event AFTER the event.

Am I the only one?

After finally finishing my November issue of Inc. Magazine http://www.inc.com/ , I am overwhelmed with excitement and ideas.  This reading comes on the heels of completing stellar issues of both Fortune Fortune Magazine Highlights and FastCompany http://www.fastcompany.com/ .  Almost every article in these 3 magazines, in the last month, has been so very relevant and applicable to me that I can't stop talking about and recommending the articles and finding ways to apply what I'm learning in my own business and life.  Is it just me?  I can't help but wonder...If the ideas, insights, and lessons from captains of industry and successful, brazen entrepreneurs are cataloged in these publications, why aren't more people implementing their shared strategies?  Ashton Kutcher clearly profiles the future of marketing in this month's FastCompany, and there are still leaders in companies of all shapes and sizes who refuse to leverage Social Media in global business.  Inc. dedicates 4 pages of blogs to follow and how these blogs can help you, and Fortune chronicles the complex legacy of Steve Jobs (which was particularly helpful to me as I was completing a case analysis on Apple for my MBA class).   We are swimming in resources, examples, philosophies, and case studies of practical application (in success and failure)...so what in the *&%%@&!! are people waiting for?!  I know there are always early adopters, and I've often heard and used the phrase, "there are 3 types of people: those who make it happen, those who watch what happens, and those who say, "what the heck just happened".  And I suppose that will always be the case, but with the mass of references, resources and information, why are there still so many otherwise competent, capable leaders running businesses and managing people as if it were 2005? (Not 1970, 1980 or even 90...the gap of the last 4-5 years is quite big enough!).

I debated what to call this blog...I have many one liners, key sayings and mantras that would have easily fit...but this topic of discussion is a great example of why I landed on "The Difference"...because that is what I call the gap between those who want and those who do.  It is the gap between intention and reality, between vision and action.  We all get so caught up in our day to day work, that we often forget that in order to be successful IN our business, we must step back and work ON our business.  That may mean doing something differently tomorrow, or it may mean actively shaping the industry and society in which we work and do business. I have faith that there are well-intentioned business-folk out there who could be better (and accomplish more) if they just translated some of these great published info-nuggets into personal just-in-time strategic coaching. (Heck, some of it is a down-right heads up on emerging consumer and marketing trends...if you just copy in practice a small version of what you read...it can make major difference in your brand awareness and sales.)

The magazines I have mentioned (and the great blogs referenced in the Nov. Inc. Mag), only scratch the resources available to us to enhance our perspective and give us context with which we may become more effective and successful.  For those of you who constantly seek information and challenge yourself and your business to improve, I salute you.  To those who simply want to be better and feel stuck - look around, ideas are everywhere.  Sometimes you have to read between the lines and interpret the strategy being used in a case study, article or profile, but I know you can do it!  To those who take the time to write great articles in these wonderful publications, in me, you have a fan! Muchas gracias, and keep it coming!

For the 3 people who might read this blog post, I hope you are motivated to pass it along - maybe 6 people will read it and jump in on the conversation!  Rock on, and have a great week!

Connected Capitalism: What Your Business Needs Right Now

Connected Capitalism - Neville Isdell 2009   I first learned the term Connected Capitalism in my MBA class. It is my personal mission to spread the word. I think this business strategy is a big part of the "answer" to running profitable, responsible and successful businesses today and in the future. Read, Internalize, Apply, Repeat.

What Your Business Needs Right Now   Great view of connected capitalism from Nate St. Pierre  Posted using ShareThis
My friend Nate, who started this great community "It Starts With Us" , is an example of a person and initiative that can help companies embrace one aspect of connected capitalism.  I hope you read linked & related articles and blogs, and do your own research on how you can better connect your business to employees, consumers, public policy, and community.

Southwest - Rocking the Nation

I have to say, I love the new Southwest Commercials: they could have easily added fees like everyone else and earned the 100's of millions of $ in revenue...but they decided to stick with their mission of "democratizing the skies"... not only did they continue to save their customers $, but they ended up getting a brilliant marketing campaign out of it. They stuck with their purpose... http://ping.fm/Eidko I don't fly Southwest, but I'm proud of them...(even though they kicked a Hooters Girl off one of the their planes)...

Diversify Your Purpose Portfolio

Where do you get your sense of purpose? From your children? Your work? Your hobbies? Your faith? Lately I’ve met some people who get their sense of purpose from only one or two places. In good times, it seems that is fine...but what happens when one of those two areas of your life are disrupted, challenged, or when they go away. I had a friend who defined herself by her job. It was everything...and when she lost it, like so many do...it crushed her. Not just created financial challenges, but it weighed on her confidence, her personal life, and ultimately, weakened her sense of purpose.

I propose we could all evaluate how “diversified” our purpose portfolio is. Are there possibly things you could do that would give you a sense of purpose? You know...a sense of who you are and what your value to the universe is. Maybe you could volunteer...use one of your strengths or talents to help those in need... or take on a hobby that makes you happy... join an industry association and take a leadership role. Not only are these ideas good to increase your positive impact in the community or to decompress from an otherwise laser-focused lifestyle and schedule, they help lessen the negative affects when things that help define us ultimately change. It’s like the song, “what you gonna do when the world turns around, what you gonna do when it shuts you down”. Whether you are a super-mom, a workaholic, the ultimate church volunteer, or are simply the average human with work and family obligations...ask yourself ...what would happen, what might it be like - if one of the major sources of your sense of purpose were altered? Would you still know who you are? Would you still feel empowered to be successful in the world? If the answer is no...it's time to diversify!
